The hand-rolled hem: the detail that defines a luxury scarf

The hand-rolled hem: the detail that defines a luxury scarf

Run your fingers along the edge of a truly fine silk scarf and you will feel it: a soft, even, hand-rolled hem. It is the single detail that most reliably separates a luxury scarf from an ordinary one.

What it is

A hand-rolled hem is exactly what it sounds like — the raw edge of the silk is rolled and stitched by hand, producing a fine, rounded, springy border. A machine hem, by contrast, is flat-stitched and lacks that give.

Why it matters

The hand-rolled hem drapes better, lies flatter at the corners, and ages more gracefully. It also signals care: it is slower to make, so a brand that pays for it is paying attention.

What to specify

When ordering, specify "hand-rolled hem" on the order line — for example "90×90 cm, 16 momme twill, hand-rolled hem". It is a small line that raises the perceived value of the whole piece.

Getting it right at scale

We offer hand-rolled edges as a standard finish option on our silk scarves — inspected line by line in our QC so the hemming is even across a full production run. Specify it on your quote request and we will price it in.
