Can you weave a shawl with a fringed selvedge?

Yes, we can weave a shawl with a fringed selvedge, where the fringe is created by the warp ends during weaving rather than added as a separate tassel. This gives a clean, integrated edge that is popular on wool and cashmere shawls.

Specification - You will need to specify the fringe length, typically 2-5 cm, and whether the fringe should be left loose or twisted. The fringe is woven in as part of the selvedge, so it adds no extra labour for attaching tassels.

Packing - A fringed selvedge can tangle if not packed carefully. We recommend individual folding with tissue or a cardboard insert to keep the fringe straight. This may increase packing time and cost slightly.

Comparison - A twisted tassel is added after weaving and can be longer and more decorative, but it is a separate operation. A woven-in fringe is more durable and lower in bulk.

Both options are available on custom orders. The exact fringe length and packing method are confirmed at sample stage.
